KNOW MORE ABOUT
The artist
It was the mid-1900s and Italy was on its knees after the war, doing its best to find the energy to rise from the ashes. In the town of Treviso, in an Italian province that was still very rural at the time, a young lad with a great natural talent for drawing and painting who was self-taught but made up for what he was missing in formal education with enthusiasm, was looking for something to fire his young imagination. At the time, the main source of stories and pictures was the cinema – television had yet to be introduced into homes – and fate had it that the young lad turned to films to feed his imagination and his thirst for images; the cinema in question was Cinema Garibaldi, in his home town of Treviso, which he visited regularly. The owner of the cinema took a shine to him and soon the talented youngster had struck a deal with him: he would paint large posters advertising the films at the cinema in exchange for free tickets. The boy’s name was Renato Casaro and little did he know that that town and that cinema were soon to be the launch pad for a long and successful career as one of the most famous and internationally acclaimed painters of film posters of his days setting a precedent in his art.
